Emily Jones was awarded a $1,000.00 scholarship and $100.00 honorable mention prize for her ink artwork exhibited in the Millikin University High School Art Show. She was selected to exhibit in the Millikin University Seventh Annual High School Art Show for the second year in a row. Last year she exhibited a photography piece; this year, it was an ink stippling work titled “Heart of Gold”. The same beautiful art work earned a “Silver Key” award in the prestigious Illinois Scholastic Art Competition in Springfield last fall. In that competition Emily and Katie Campbell (also a silver key recipient in ink), had the opportunity to take classes with professional artists and learn new techniques and mediums.
Elementary student council members collected $2563.67 at the elementary school before and after school on Friday November 22nd. The money will be given to the American Red Cross for Central Illinois tornado relief efforts.
Heyworth Elementary honored Veteran's Day with activities in each classroom. Kindergarten created banners that were displayed at the VFW. 1st grade created the Star Veteran’s Bulletin Board in the lobby. 2nd grade did a flag timeline activity and made flags for the hallway. 3rd grade visited the Simpkins Military History Museum. 4th grade visited the VFW and learned flag etiquette and military uniform history. 5th grade participated in a guided cemetery walk and 21 gun salute. 6th grade was visited by Veteran Kurt Neilueb. Each classroom also participated in additional activities as well. The annual Veteran’s Day Poster Contest Winners are K-Lacy Gerike, 1-Colin Smith, 2-Rylei Sanders, 3-Carsten Jones, 4-Angel Solarczyk, 5-Damon Gilgarcia, and 6-Shae Ruppert.
